Distinguished Engineer, Software Architect

Fremont, California

Apply

Supernal is at the forefront of creating emerging mobility solutions that will foster the development of human-centered cities. We are designing a completely new electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft tailored to the mobility needs of future cities. This allows passengers a seamless intermodal journey that safely transports them to their final destination. We fuse research in autonomy, robotics, aviation and services to define a new category of mobility for the world’s communities. We believe in creative thinking and collaboration to help build a better mobility experience for everyone, improving people’s ability to move – whether for work or play.

What we do:

The Distinguished Engineer, Software Architecture collaborates across the organization including R&D, Engineering, Test & Evaluation, and Data Platform teams to envision computing software architectures (both cloud and embedded), large-scale data communication, and use of large-scale data platforms serving as a committee member of the CTO architect group.

Scope of architectural influence spans environments from ground operations, vehicle computing/sensor deployment and regional infrastructure involving high performance cloud computing technologies applicable to the eVTOL product. Also, as part of the R&D team, discover/define autonomy systems and candidate architectures required to mature increasing levels of vehicle automation over time. Creates architectural roadmaps, high level diagrams and CONOPS for perception & navigational sensor systems to support hazard avoidance, flight guidance, automation for takeoff and landing, mission planning and contingency mitigation scenarios.

What you can do:

  • Applies Model Based Engineering (MBE) technologies and groundbreaking tools to establish high performance, understandable and rapid deployment of reusable modular eVTOL systems and software components
  • Integrates required Systems of Record to establish and maintain artifacts required for certification standards (e.g., DO-178C, DO-254)
  • Specifies and collaborates with other systems owners to establish high-fidelity Interface Control Documentation (ICDs) in digital form consumable by upstream and downstream stakeholders (e.g., particularly machines)
  • Applies expertise in software languages/libraries, cloud computing architectures, pipelines, networks, AI/ML and collaborative workspace environments to remove key friction points from autonomy engineering and machine learning data driven virtuous cycles. (e.g., applied software using MATLAB/Simulink, Python3, Jupyter, Tensorflow, CV, DSP and Controls Toolboxes)
  • Collaborates with industry leading technology companies in edge computing, cloud computing, mathematical tools and software (e.g., Nvidia, HPe, IBM, Microsoft, Google, MathWorks) to facilitate high performance engineering development environments
  • Applies pilot/engineer real-world experience in collaboration with company flight test pilots to follow through on real-world physics and to envision safe, simple and efficient human-machine interfaces in the AAM environment
  • Sets Autonomy Vision, authors Automation Development Roadmap, CONOPS and other guiding artifacts in alignment with Company goals and entry-into-service objectives for the AAM ecosystem
  • Engages with external partners and suppliers to establish high-level supporting architectures and technologies
  • Build and work out requirements and statements-of-work
  • Works with internal supplier/partner management to establish deliverables, value chains and performance expectations & timelines
  • Other duties as assigned

What you can contribute:

  • Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Control Systems, or related degree
  • A minimum of twenty (20) years of hands-on development experience in the areas of computing software architectures (both embedded and cloud), large-scale data communication, and use of large-scale data platforms (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)
  • Prior experience with autonomous or remotely controlled systems
  • Work experience in a similar senior-level position at an engineering department
  • Proven multi-functional experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactive delivery of communication and follow up
  • Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools
  • Experience developing systems and software to high criticality levels (DAL-A/B)
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Must have the ability to independently prioritize and accomplish work within time constraints
  • Self-motivated and forward-thinking personality

You may also be able to contribute:

  • Master’s or PhD degree preferred
