Sr. Cockpit Controls Engineer

What we do:

The Cockpit Controls Engineer is responsible for the development and certification of the pilot flight control inceptors for a commercial eVTOL aircraft. This position will develop the full lifecycle of the inceptor products (sticks, levers) including trade studies, specifications, interfaces, performance verification, formal qualification, and aircraft integration. The role works closely with the Flight Controls and Cockpit Interior design groups.

What you can do:

  • Participate in trade studies and prototype evaluations with flight controls engineers, human factors engineers and pilots to determine optimal configuration for fly-by-wire cockpit controls
  • Develop requirements and component specifications for integrated inceptor units that provide pilot input commands (thrust/collective, pitch, roll, and yaw) to the flight control computers
  • Perform inceptor requirements capture, component specifications, interface management, performance analysis, safety assessment, verification testing, formal qualification, and certification
  • Oversee all development activities of outside supplier and ensure delivery of compliant hardware
  • Support aircraft installation and integration, including writing and releasing any functional test plans/procedures required for flight test and production aircraft
  • Prepare and communicate design and performance material to all collaborators
  • Other duties as assigned

What you can contribute:

  • B.S. in mechanical, aerospace, or a relevant engineering field
  • A minimum 5-8 years of experience in development of flight control inceptors (an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered)
  • Experience managing suppliers for commercial aircraft components
  • Experience with aircraft installation, testing, and troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with FAA CFR part 21/23/25/27/29 or other certification experience
  • Proficient using requirements & configuration management tools (DOORS/NextGen desired)
  • Proficient using 3D modeling/analysis and 2D layout tools (CATIA/3D Experience desired)
  • Knowledge of qualification and certification rules applicable to commercial aircraft equipment, including standards such as ARP 4754A, ARP 4761, ARP6001, DO-160G, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Self-motivated and forward-thinking personality

You may also be able to contribute:

  • Master's or PhD in relevant engineering field
