Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Irvine, California

What we do:

The Sr. Mechanical Engineer is responsible for developing design solutions, creating, and releasing 3D CAD models and 2D drawings in Catia V6 3DX. This role is an expert at Catia V6 and able to design injection molded plastic and composite parts with complicated surfaces, machined aluminum parts and mechanisms.

The engineer is heavily involved in the building of prototype and flight test aircraft as well as incubating technology that will be transitioned to the operations/production team in the long run. They contemplate design for manufacturing from the beginning and ensure a smooth transition into production with the operations team. The role collaborates with all technical development teams, including systems, interiors, flight technology, and airframe.

What you can do:

  • Use creativity and the field of engineering towards the design of a mechanical structure, mechanism and/or system
  • Design mechanical / structural systems and products based on a set of given and derived requirements
  • Work directly with System engineering to gather and understand the project design requirements
  • Develop technology and transition it to production
  • Experience designing CNC Machining, injection molding, vacuum formed plastic, sheet metal stampings, castings, forgings, and composite components
  • Understand corrosion in metallic components and best practices for plating and corrosion prevention
  • Modify designs based on cost, weight and manufacturing targets and capabilities
  • Work with structural analysis team to verify capabilities of structure before fabrication
  • Hold design reviews and presentations among peers to gain design feedback
  • Participate and provide feedback in design reviews/brainstorming sessions held by other engineers/designers working on different projects
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify process deficiencies and develop solutions to improve those deficiencies
  • Prepare and author various manuals / templates such as design standard and best practices, procedures, and processes
  • Assure system and product quality by confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes
  • Prepare product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information
  • Provide engineering information by answering questions and requests
  • Build 3D models of design details per design standard processes using Catia
  • Prepare manufacturing drawings to ASME Y14.5 standards using GD&T for manufacturability and repeatability in Catia
  • Perform tolerance stack up analysis and detect design interferences
  • Creation and maintenance of a Bill of Materials for one or more projects
  • Record notes, design changes, and test results
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to develop an accurate accounting of all engineering hours required for various types of internal projects
  • Maintain relationships with key material and component vendors
  • Provide technical support to vendors and manufacturing teams
  • Ensure compliance with safety / regulatory standards
  • Collaborate with all engineering teams to ensure design for manufacturing principles are built in early
  • Other duties as assigned

What you can contribute:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in aircraft or automotive interior design (an equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered for this role)
  • Expert knowledge of Catia V6, and advanced surfacing; at least 10,000 hrs. using Catia V5 and 5,000 hrs. using Catia V6
  • Experience designing components and assemblies for aircraft/automotive interiors, including seats, consoles, sidewall, floors and ceiling closeout panels, composite monuments, privacy/class dividers, cable raceways and mechanisms
  • Experience designing injection molded, vacuum formed, CNC machined aluminum and 3D printed structural composite part
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactive delivery of communication and follow up
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Must have the ability to independently prioritize and accomplish work within time constraints
  • Self-motivated and forward-thinking personality
  • Analytical Thinking and ability to make well-reasoned decision

The pay range for this position is:
$166,400$232,960 USD
